Xavier Witdouck

Founder & CEO

Xavier is a software engineer with over 23 years of experience developing market leading quantitative investment platforms at some of the world's largest asset management firms. Xavier brings a deep understanding of systematic investment strategies and portfolio construction techniques across multiple asset classes and investment styles.

Prior to founding D3X Systems, Xavier worked at AQR Capital, a globally renowned quantitative hedge fund, where he developed a next-generation Managed Futures platform and then led the development of their Fixed Income stack. Before joining AQR, Xavier worked at BGI / BlackRock within the Global Market Strategies Group, a leading systematic global macro hedge fund. In the earlier part of his career, Xavier worked at UBS and Bank of America developing low latency Fixed Income pricing and trading systems. Xavier holds a Masters in Aeronautical Engineering from Imperial College, London.                    

Scott Shaffer, PhD, CFA

Chief Research Officer

Scott is a research professional who has developed mathematical models that have delivered significant scientific impact and financial returns. He brings a deep command of numerical methods, including nonlinear optimization, stochastic simulation, and robust statistical analysis.

Prior to joining D3X Systems, he served as a Portfolio Manager for Sensato Investors, where he co-managed a multi-billion-dollar international quantitative equity strategy that used extensive proprietary research to improve forecasts of equity return and covariance. Previously, he served in senior research and technology roles focused on improving investment performance for Menta Capital, SAC Capital Advisors, and Barclays Global Investors. Scott has also held academic positions at Stanford, MIT, and University of Southern California. Scott has a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and a BS in Chemical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.                       

Michele Rossi

Head of Architecture

Michele is a software engineer with over 20 years of experience developing high-performance software systems in the financial industry, mostly for sell-side banks and ISVs. Michele brings deep expertise in the development of complex distributed computing systems designed for high availability and low latency.

Prior to joining D3X Systems, Michele worked for Taskize in the UK, an innovative startup developing unique software to facilitate inter-organization task management. Previously Michele served as a lead engineer at ION Trading, one of the world’s largest ISVs of high-performance trading technology to sell-side banks. He has also served in senior engineering roles at several large institutions, namely Royal Bank of Scotland, Merrill Lynch, Barclays Capital, and UBS. Michele holds a degree in Computer Science from the University of Pisa, Italy.

Kenneth F. Kroner, PhD

Strategic Advisor

Kenneth F. Kroner, PhD, is the founder and CEO of Pluribus Labs, an asset management startup. Previously he was a Senior Managing Director at BlackRock, where his teams were responsible for several hundred billion dollars of active multi-asset and quantitative investment strategies. Ken also served as a member of BlackRock’s Global Executive Committee. Prior to BlackRock, Ken oversaw asset allocation (which included global macro, active currencies and active commodities), fund of hedge funds and client solutions at Barclays Global Investors (BGI), until BGI was acquired by BlackRock in 2009. He started his career as an economics and finance professor at the University of Arizona.

Dr. Kroner serves or has served on various academic boards, foundation boards, corporate boards and academic journal editorial boards. He is a founder of the Pacific Center for Asset Management, an academic research institute that brings the power of academia to bear on issues faced by asset owners. He is also the co-chair of UC San Diego’s $3b capital campaign. His research on forecasting volatility and asset returns has been widely published in both academic and practitioner journals. Dr. Kroner earned a BA degree in mathematics and economics from the University of Alberta and a PhD in economics from the University of California at San Diego.                    

Rodolfo Martell, PhD

Strategic Advisor

Rodolfo Martell is Head of Portfolio Strategy at Pluribus Labs. Previously, he was a Managing Director in AQR’s global stock selection group and the sole strategist on the firm’s Data Governance Committee. Before AQR, he was a Managing Director at QMA (the quantitative investment management arm of Prudential Financial) where he was a portfolio manager, global lead strategist and co-chair of the ESG group. Before QMA he was a Portfolio Manager and Strategist in BlackRock’s Systematic Active Equities group (which he joined through its acquisition of Barclays Global Investors (BGI) in 2009).

Rodolfo earned a PhD in finance from The Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business and a BA in Economics from Universidad de las Americas-Puebla. His research has been published in the Review of Finance, the American Economic Review and the Emerging Markets Review. Rodolfo also serves as a non-executive director of Zentific Investment Management, a quantitative firm based in Hong Kong.
